In accordance with the free movement of goods and people EU citizens have the right to live and work in other EU countries without the need for a work permit. UK/EU citizens working in Germany have the same rights as citizens of that country in regards to pay, working conditions, access to housing, vocational training, social security and trade union membership. Families and immediate dependants are entitled to join them, and have similar rights.
Identifying a job opportunity in Germany can often be a complex matter, involving such topics as qualifications, social security and taxation. Although there exists agreement within the EU on the mutual recognition of qualifications and university degrees of other EU members. Any decision on your suitability for a position will ultimately rests with the employer's own discretion. At the very least, the majority of employers will insist on a good command of German.
The EURES Network (European Employment Services)
As a member of the EEA, the Employment Service in the UK holds details of vacancies in all member countries, which are supplied via the EURES network. This is a partnership between the employment services in the EEA, to support free movement of workers. The EURES system facilitates the circulation of vacancies and enables access of up-to-date information on living and working conditions in each EEA member state via a computer network. There are also 500 specially trained staff throughout the EEA who administer the EURES system. They are called Euroadvisers and they specialise in the practical issues surrounding employment in the member states, and can assist workers and employees who wish to start a career abroad and help companies and employers to find suitable employees from all over the EEA. Euroadvisers can be contacted via local Employment Service Jobcentres. There are currently more than 50 job centres in Germany that are linked to the EURES network.
