Residence requirements eased for non-EU citizens studying in Germany

Under the Residence Act of 1 January 2005, non-EU nationals who have obtained a degree or equivalent from a German university can stay on in Germany for one more year to look for employment.

Previously (up to 31 December 2008) this was subject to the condition that no German citizen (or equivalent) was available for the kind of work being sought.

However, as from 31 December 2008 this condition no longer applies, and it is therefore now easier for non-EU nationals to remain in Germany after obtaining a university degree.

More detailed information can be obtained from local Job Centres (Agenturen für Arbeit).
