Can I have my document certified elsewhere?
Please take a look at the table on our overview page: Legalisation. If you are not sure whether certification by a foreign public official would be admissible in your case, please consult the German authority to which the certified document must be submitted.
Following a change in money laundering legislation, the German missions are no longer allowed to certify signatures or conduct identity checks for the purpose of opening a bank account, taking out a loan, credit card applications, account authorisations and the like. Please ask your bank for further information.
An exception is made with regard to blocked accounts for foreign students applying for a visa. The Legalisation department is still able to certify signatures and conduct identity checks in connection with the opening of a blocked account.
Important: Change of Procedure
In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the Legalisation departments of the German Embassy London and the Consulate General Edinburgh are unable to offer their usual walk-in service for the foreseeable future. We regret, therefore, that it is not possible at present to visit the Embassy or Consulate General during office hours without an appointment.

No more than one person per appointment
Please note that, as a general rule, a separate appointment should be booked for each person.
If your case is such that two people need to be present at once (e.g. certification of two signatures on a document), you may book a single appointment together. Minors are allowed to visit with an accompanying adult.
In cases where more than two people wish to be seen regarding the same matter (e.g. a family applying for naturalisation, or several family members renouncing an inheritance), you should book more than one appointment (one appointment for a maximum of two people, two appointments for a maximum of four people etc.).
Please note that applications in relation to nationality can be filed by one person on behalf of another. Applicants only need to all attend in person if all the signatures need to be certified.
Please arrive on time!
Please ensure to attend your appointment on time. It is our aim to adhere to a full, tight schedule. Please allow for lengthy waiting times outside the Embassy, however. Owing to pandemic restrictions, we can only allow a maximum of 10 people in our waiting room at any one time. Please ensure to adhere to social distancing regulations while in our waiting room.
Method of payment:
Please bring cash with you, in the exact amount (GBP) if at all possible, to cover your fee. We regret that card payments are not possible at present.
Face mask without valve is required
Out of consideration for our security staff and other applicants, you are required to wear a protective face mask covering your mouth and nose without valve (“community mask”). Applicants who do not wear a protective face mask will not be permitted entry.
You will be checked before entry
All applicants will have to undergo a security check upon entering the embassy. This may include taking your body temperature by means of a non-contact infrared thermometer. Please be aware that you are not allowed to attend your appointment if you or any member of your household show signs or symptoms of a coronavirus infection (fever, coughing). Applicants who are not symptom-free will not be permitted entry to the Embassy.

What to bring for the certification of a signature
- your valid passport,
- the document to be signed,
- proof of address in the UK (e.g. Council Tax or utility bill, not bank statements), and
- the fee in cash.
The fee for certification of a signature is dependent on the purpose of the certification as well as the value of the matter, and can vary between 20 and 250 euros, payable in £ sterling.
What to bring for certified copies
- the original document,
- copies of the original document which need to be certified, and
- the fee in cash
- The fee for certification of a photocopy is at least 10 euros, payable in £ sterling, and is dependent on the number of copies to be certified.
