The German Embassy in London is seeking a full-time Assistant in the Liaison Office of the Customs Attaché to start on 1 October 2026.

This role includes:

  • Assisting with the running of the office (processing and filing of messages, case file administration, electronic record-keeping, administration and monitoring of appointments, deadlines and resubmissions, budgetary accounting), making administrative arrangements for meetings, visiting delegations, business travel and conference attendance, including follow-up.
  • Press monitoring and media research
  • Independently drafting letters in line with the guidelines (in German and English)
  • Ad-hoc translations (German-English, English-German), including on legal, customs and criminal matters
  • Communicating with relevant domestic and foreign authorities
  • Other administrative tasks as required

Candidate Profile:

  • Must already be entitled to live and work in the United Kingdom
  • Very good spoken and written German and English (preferably at least one of these to native level), highly articulate
  • Proficient in common IT applications (MS Office, internet)
  • Reliable, accurate and able to work independently
  • Willing and able to work as part of a close-knit team
  • Good organisational and communication skills, correct etiquette
  • Intercultural skills/ experience
  • Flexible, able to work under pressure, willing to take on tasks outside of normal working hours when necessary
  • Willing to travel occasionally on official business
  • Professional experience in the fields of customs/ police/ security/ politics and basic knowledge of the structure, role and workings of the relevant German and British authorities is desirable

The Liaison Office of the Customs Attaché handles customs-related, strategic and operational tasks relating to the monitoring of cross-border trade and the detection and prosecution of organised crime, including financial crime.

Training will be provided. Contract based on UK employment law. Normal working time will be 40 hours a week. Appointment will initially be on the basis of a five-month fixed-term contract. Salary, which is based on the Embassy’s pay scheme, will be £3,818 gross per month, rising to £3,978 gross per month upon completion of the five-month trial period. Salary will be taxable in Germany unless you are a UK citizen and do not also hold German citizenship. National Insurance contributions are to be paid in the UK.
