It is now possible to apply for selected types of long-term visas (category D only) online with our missions in the UK. At present, online applications are possible in the following categories:

• Opportunity card
• University studies including year abroad / exchange placements

Before starting your online-application, please read the information about the respective visa type on our website very carefully. Incorrectly uploaded documents or incomplete applications will extend processing times. Insufficient documents might lead to refusal of the application. Only complete and approved applications will lead to an appointment to present original documents and biometrics.

Important notice

Please note, that applicants residing in Scotland have to submit their application at the Consulate General in Edinburgh. Applicants residing in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight, the British Channel Islands, Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) have to submit their application at the Embassy in London.

Please choose the correct visa department very carefully. Incorrectly submitted applications cannot be processed.

You will receive online feedback as to whether your documents are complete. Once having received confirmation that all documents are complete, your appointment at the visa section will thereafter be quick and efficient: you present the requested original documents, provide your biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) and pay the fee.

Step 1: Access the Consular Services Portal

2. Upload the required documents
3. Submit for preliminary review

Step 2: Embassy conducts preliminary review of the application

1. If applicable: corrections to be made
2. Preliminary review completed
3. Applicant transferred to the appointment system of London Embassy/ Consulate General in Edinburgh

Step 3: In-person appointment at the London Embassy or Consulate General in Edinburgh

1. Present original documents requested
2. Biometric data to be recorded
3. Payment

Important information

Schengen Visas (category C and A) will continue to be exclusively processed through our Visa Application Centres (VACs), TLS Contact, in London, Manchester or Edinburgh.
