Welcome

Passport and ID Card applications for persons under the age of 18 and 16 respectively

Article

Please note that BOTH of the parents AND the child must attend the appointment.

General information

Please note the following points regarding applications:

  • The applicant must be present in person (for identification and fingerprints), including newborns
  • The child’s parents or guardians must be present (further information can be found below)
  • Each applicant must have booked a separate appointment in advance, ie more than one child applying = more than one appointment
  • More than one document can be applied for at one appointment (e.g. passport and ID card)
  • Identity documents are sent by post (Royal Mail) when ready

Processing time

Biometric passports and ID cards are printed centrally by the Federal Printing Office in Berlin. Processing times are as follows:

Passport application, standard service 4-6 weeks
Passport application, express service (higher fee) 2-3 weeks
ID card 2-3 weeks
Child’s passport 1-5 working days

These are the processing times from the date the Embassy orders the documents from the Federal Printing Office. If there are any delays in the application process (e.g. due to missing documents, etc.), this will increase the processing time.

There can also occasionally be delays due to logistical problems, but these are out of our control (so, for example, it is not possible to claim back the extra fee paid for the express service).

Length of validity of identity documents

Biometric passports and ID cards are valid as follows (starting from the date of application)

Applicants aged 24 and over 10 years
Applicants younger than 24 6 years

Children’s passports are valid for 1 year, and only up until the child turns 12.

Old identity documents

What happens to your old expired or unexpired identity documents:

  • Passport/ ID card/ children’s passport already expired at time of application
    • Document is cancelled at your appointment and returned to you
  • Passport/ ID card/ children’s passport still valid
    • With your consent, document is cancelled at your appointment and returned to you
    • Document stays with application, and is cancelled and sent to you with your new identity document
    • You take the document away with you after filing your application (e.g. for forthcoming journey) and must then send it to the Embassy to be cancelled (even if it has expired in the meantime)

Applications for persons under the age of 18

Applicants under the age of 18 cannot apply for a passport/children’s passport without the consent of their legal representatives. It is therefore essential that the child and his/her parents or guardians are present for the filing of the application, in other words the appointment at the Embassy.

If one parent or guardian is unable to attend the appointment (usually a parent who lives elsewhere or who can’t attend due to work commitments), a completed and certified declaration of consent will need to be provided.

In the event that one parent has sole custody of the child, proof will need to be provided, normally by producing a court order in which custody is transferred to one parent (e.g. Child Arrangement Order or a German court order).

If only one parent attends the appointment without a certified declaration of consent from the absent parent or proof of sole custody, the application for the child will NOT be accepted, and a new appointment will have to be made, regardless of the length and cost of the journey to the mission.

These rules are purely for the protection of children.

ID cards can be applied for without parents’ consent from the age of 16 onwards.

Changes since last application

If, since your last application, there have been significant changes in your circumstances that are relevant to your application, we would ask you to check whether any further action needs to be taken in advance.

Example 1:

You have got married and would like to take your spouse’s surname. In this case you need to make a name declaration before submitting your application.

Example 2:

You want to be or have been naturalised in the United Kingdom. Make sure you receive(d) a retention permit beforehand. Otherwise you risk losing your German citizenship.
