Online passport application

The German Embassy in London is one of the diplomatic missions taking part in a pilot project to digitise Federal Foreign Office services – specifically passport applications.

Online application via the Consular Services Portal

The Federal Foreign Office is developing and expanding its range of consular services available online. The Consular Services Portal is helping it to gradually simplify the process both for applicants and for the missions abroad.

Further information about the Consular Services Portal can be found here.

At present, during the pilot phase, online application is only possible in the following cases:

  • applicants aged 18 and over
  • from the consular district of the German Embassy in London
  • applications for a biometric passport (If you wish to apply for a national ID card at the same time, you can still use the Consular Services Portal, but when you go to your in-person appointment where your biometric data is recorded you need to tell the counter staff that you also wish to apply for a national ID card.)

Please note that in some cases, despite having submitted your passport application online, you may still need to produce the originals of your documents at your Embassy appointment.

Information on the documents required for your application can be found here.

Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to apply via the Consular Services Portal and then have your biometric data recorded by one of our Honorary Consuls. For applicants wishing to apply for a biometric passport through one of our Honorary Consuls, the process is the same as before.
